AVG 8.0 Technical FAQ » AVG Rescue CD
The AVG Rescue CD is basically a portable variant of AVG based on the Windows PE platform. It is distributed as a bootable CD intended for operating system recovery in such an event where the system cannot be loaded in the regular way - for example due to substantial virus infection.
Initially the AVG Rescue CD will load the temporary operating system Windows PE edition and run AVG, which can be then used in the usual way for virus and spyware detection and removal. In addition, administration tools are available for advanced users. The list of other features can be found in FAQ 1009.

The AVG Rescue CD provides the user with the possibility to boot-up and access files on a Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 system (using either FAT, FAT32 or NTFS file systems). It is necessary that the computer’s BIOS will allow direct booting from the CD, (for correct CD startup) and also that the computer has at least 128 MB of RAM memory installed (256 MB RAM is highly recommended). Finally, a CD-ROM or compatible device must be installed in the computer.
Please let us inform you that AVG Rescue CD is currently not available for PCs using the Windows Vista operating system. The current version is based on the Windows PE 1.6 platform, while the Windows Vista operating system supports the new version Windows PE 2.0 platform.
The release of new version of AVG Rescue CD with Windows Vista support is in our long term plan. The exact date is not available yet.

If you encounter the following error during boot process of AVG Rescue CD, it indicates that the CD does not contain drivers suitable for your hard disk controller:
Could not create Z:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVG7 - Incorrect Function.
This situation can be solved by providing correct drivers during the boot of the CD:
- insert a floppy disk with the controller drivers
- press F6 during the boot process
- the drivers will be loaded and the Rescue CD will work correctly
Alternativelly, you can include the drivers when creating the Rescue CD using the MakeCD utility. For more information on how to use this utility, please refer to the AVG Rescue CD User manual.
On some computers with 256 MB RAM or less, the AVG Rescue CD may report the following error during update:
Your system is low on virtual memory. To ensure that Windows runs properly, increase the size of your virtual memory paging file. For more information, see Help.
The problem occurs only when you create the CD with the option "Use RAM disk" in the ISO options, and can be eliminated by creating the Rescue CD without this option.
The diference is in the temporary storage which is needed for the Rescue CD. When "Use RAM disk" setting is applied, the Rescue CD creates virtual RAM disk (taking up minimally 96 MB of RAM) where it stores downloaded AVG updates and other files. When such Rescue CD is started on a computer with 256 MB of RAM or less, there is not enough free RAM left for correct function of the operating system, and the error occurs.
If you disable the option "Use RAM disk", the temporary data is stored directly onto the hard drive of the host computer, and the mentioned problem does not occur.
